Non-singing minstrel while he sleeps (i.e. during his spare time). Fruit lover, particularly when served as a red juice made from fermented grapes in an appropriate (and, sometimes, even inappropriate) glass. Fascinated by paradoxes – indeed, this sentence is false.

Ivan HeibiJunior Assistant Professor and CTO
University of Bologna

Ivan Heibi is a researcher at the Department of Classical and Italian Philology of the University of Bologna. His work mainly concerns the use of Semantic Web technologies in the analysis of the bibliographic entities and the academic publishing behaviours/dynamics. He joined OpenCitations in 2017, to work on the development of OpenCitations’ technical infrastructure. University of Bologna

Arcangelo Massari holds a master’s degree in Digital Humanities and Digital Knowledge. He deals with Semantic Web technologies, focusing on bibliographic data and provenance management. He joined OpenCitations in 2021, to work on the publication OpenCitations Meta, a semantic database of scholarly metadata (released in December 2022). Since October 2022, Arcangelo has been pursuing a PhD in Cultural Heritage in the Digital Ecosystem at the University of Bologna, with the aim of creating tailor-made interfaces for curating metadata of museums, archives and libraries. In his free time, Arcangelo finds joy in exploring psychology and tickling the ivories of a piano.

Arianna MorettiSoftware and Systems Developer – PhD student
University of Bologna

Arianna has a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Religions, and Oriental Civilizations and a master’s degree in Digital Humanities and Digital Knowledge, specializing in Computational Thinking and Open Science. She has been working at OpenCitations as a thesis student first, then as a research fellow, and, since March 2023, she is a PhD student in Cultural Heritage in the Digital Ecosystem. In particular, she deals with software development for the ingestion of citation and bibliographic data and metadata, validation of persistent identifiers, and workflows for metadata crosswalks between different file formats and data models. In her spare time, she enjoys roller-skating, cross-stitching, and sewing (but she mainly repairs the damages caused by her kittens).

Elia RizzettoSofware Developer – Research Fellow PhD student
University of Bologna

Elia Rizzetto was born in Friuli-Venezia Giulia in 1996. After completing the classical high school diploma, he enrolled in the faculty of Humanities at the University of Bologna, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in 2019. In 2023, still at the University of Bologna, he earned his master’s degree in Digital Humanities and Digital Knowledge, with a thesis on Programming and Data Structures focusing on the validation of citation data and bibliographic metadata. Since May 2023, he has been working as a research fellow at OpenCitations. He likes to think of himself as the opposite of a tech bro, but he has still tried to learn rock climbing. Lately, he is trying to learn Modern Greek and experiment with microprocessors.

Matteo Guenci holds a master degree in Digital Humanities and Digital Knowledge from the University of Bologna, where he completed a thesis on the automatic extraction of software mentions from scientific papers using LLMs. Passionate about open science and driven by a fascination with artificial intelligence, he is trying to develop expertise in AI and AI-driven analysis. In 2025, he joined OpenCitations to help simplify and enrich the building of citation networks, making data easier to parse, understand and reuse. Outside of his professional work, Matteo enjoys traveling, socializing over a pint with friends, doing physical activity in order to become ENORMOUS.

Mario PetrellaSystems Administrator
University of Bologna

Mario graduated in DAMS (Drama, Art and Music Studies) at the University of Bologna, which he blames entirely on his passion for cinema and opera. Over the years, he completed various IT courses and picked up a few certifications along the way. In 2024, he joined OpenCitations team, focusing on Infrastructure as Code development. When he’s not contemplating the *NIX Terminal, you can find him rock climbing, playing foosball, engaging in airsoft games, or exploring Italian villages with a camera pretending he’s the next Cartier-Bresson (narrator: he isn’t)

In memory of David Shotton (1943-2024), founder and director of OpenCitations.

The Founder and Co-Director of OpenCitations, Prof. David M. Shotton, peacefully passed away on Saturday, 18th May, after a long battle against illness. With his death, OpenCitations lost a Director, a Mentor, and a Guide. OpenCitations wouldn’t have existed without David’s foresight, which led him to design the first prototype of OpenCitations as a one-year project founded by JISC in 2010. Since then, David has closely followed the developments of his open infrastructure, to whose growth he has dedicated his considerations and intuitions almost until his last months. In one of his last authorial posts on this blog, he traces the history of OpenCitations, and his words show the pride of having seen the “little acorns” grow into a globally validated and trusted infrastructure.
